Your Hearing

We Put Our Focus on Your Hearing Health

One in every eight (almost 41 million) Americans suffer from some level of hearing loss, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) statistics. Close to 28.8 million of these individuals would benefit from wearing prescription hearing aids but fewer than 4 million take advantage of them.

Worse yet, those with an untreated hearing loss place themselves at a higher risk for developing additional cognitive and mental health conditions as well as other health issues. The damage reaches deeper, as dealing with individuals suffering from a hearing loss takes an enormous toll on families.

How We Can Help

Comprehensive Hearing Assessments

Since 1 in 8 Americans have some form of a hearing loss, it is likely that at least one person close to you is experiencing early signs of a hearing loss. Because of its slow and gradual decline, hearing loss is often very difficult to self-diagnose.

Much like aging, we never notice day-by-day differences when looking in the mirror, but when we review photos of ourselves from years back, we see stark differences. To identify the progression of hearing loss, it is necessary to have an accurate assessment of your current level of hearing or to establish a baseline.

Because early detection allows for a broader range of treatment options and greater treatment success, we highly recommend an annual hearing assessment if you’re over the age of 50.

Advanced Prescription Hearing Aid Technology

Taking the necessary steps to take advantage of prescription hearing aid technology is difficult for many people because of the stigma associated with hearing aids when they were growing up. Most think of those bulky, clunky devices their grandparents used, which had a tendency to make loud whistling noises for no apparent reason. Hearing aid technology continues to make drastic changes, which make them smaller, lightweight, and discreet, as well as providing substantial improvements to performance.

The latest technology boasts features, such as advanced connectivity to your smartphone or other electronic devices and rechargeability, which allows the capacity to stream music, phone calls, or your television directly to your prescription hearing aids. This means that the latest technology doesn’t just amplify your hearing, but it also amplifies your connection to the world around you.

Cochlear Implant Mapping

Children who receive a cochlear implant before 18 months of age develop language skills at a rate comparable to children with normal hearing, and many succeed in mainstream classrooms, according to National Institute of Health (NIH) sources. Worldwide cochlear implant usage reached about 600,000 in 2016, with approximately 40% of users being children.

Cochlear implants treat severe to profound hearing loss in persons who receive little to no benefit from hearing aids for speech understanding ability. They are surgically implanted devices, which bypass the damaged inner ear using direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve in order to transmit sound signals to the brain for processing. There has been a significant rate of cochlear implanting success in eligible patients. For the devices to work properly, they require programming or mapping.

Tinnitus Assessments

Affecting 15% of the US population, tinnitus is one of the most common hearing challenges many of us face. Until you experience tinnitus, it’s difficult to comprehend just how much it impacts your day-to-day life. Many individuals describe tinnitus as a ringing sound while others have compared it to the sound of crickets, whooshing, and/or buzzing. It can be constant or intermittent, but it is troublesome and needs to be addressed.

Although there is no “magic pill” to fix tinnitus, there are many ways to manage it and minimize its effect on your life. We have been helping patients to do just that for the past three decades. If tinnitus is having a negative impact on your life, your career, or your relationships, then we encourage you to have a simple, non-invasive tinnitus assessment.

Balance Disorder Assessments

Balance disorders are common among Americans. Those aged over forty are particularly susceptible to them, with nationwide surveys showing roughly a third have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction (National Center for Biotechnology).

Some people with balance disorders become easily confused or find it hard to concentrate. Others acquire impaired mobility or experience a classic dizziness sensation. These symptoms may dissipate over time or be extremely mild. But in other cases, they can become chronic and greatly affect someone’s quality of life.

The Hearing Center offers comprehensive assessments for patients with balance disorders. Our ENT physicians, neurologists, and physical therapy providers can then tailor treatments to each individual. These can include medical and surgical procedures, therapeutic rehabilitation, and canalith repositioning. We’re perfectly equipped to help every patient overcome this issue.
