Recent Study Shares the Association Between Social Isolation, Loneliness, Hearing Loss, and Increased Risk of Mortality

Jun 13, 2024

A study was recently published that links social isolation and loneliness to premature mortality—a horrifying but true statement.

The team of researchers from Harbin Medical University took on a comprehensive meta-analysis that examined 90 studies and over two million participants. The research findings were shocking: individuals who experience social isolation have a 32 percent higher risk of premature death.

My attention turned to the connections between hearing loss and social isolation while reading through the study; hearing loss significantly affects one’s ability to communicate properly with the people around them, often leading to them avoiding social events as a result.

The study shared that social isolation and loneliness are considered chronic stressors, which can lead to adverse health outcomes. Prolonged social isolation acts as a trigger for stress hormone release, which will negatively affect the body.

Feeling lonely isn’t something to hide away from the people you care about. As unlikely as it sounds, social isolation can lead to more adverse effects down the line, especially if it’s linked to an untreated hearing loss.

How Do I Treat Hearing Loss?

Professional hearing care is the best way to look after your hearing health. Comprehensive hearing tests, tinnitus assessments, and hearing aid technology can all help you stave off social isolation by looking after your hearing.

If you’ve struggled with hearing parts of the conversation in busy spaces, it’s frustrating and isolating to be out of the loop. By looking after your hearing health, you’ll be able to rejoin the conversation and bid loneliness in crowded rooms goodbye.

My team and I are passionate about doing whatever it takes for our patients to help them hear the life they love. Everyone needs something different out of their hearing care; if you or someone you know has been losing confidence or disconnecting with the world, why not come see us, or send them our way?

Even just one hearing assessment can help you understand your current range of hearing and see the options for what you can do to address any hearing loss challenges if they worsen over time.

Social isolation and hearing loss go hand in hand; when either are untreated, your health can get worse. Tackle both at once by getting your hearing tested. Two birds with one stone!
